Community Results: Improving Our Local Quality of Life

Dwayne Bohac has been an active community leader long before he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. He was a founder of the Save Our Neighborhoods-Northwest Coalition and is a member of the White Oak Bayou Association and the Spring Branch Revitalization Association. Bohac believes that there is nothing more important than protecting our neighborhoods and our local quality of life.

That is why local community initiatives have been a top priority during his term as State Representative, equally important as the business being conducted down the road in Austin. Since taking office in January of 2003, Dwayne has been involved with a variety of local issues, working with community leaders and other area elected officials to make District 138 a better place to live and raise a family.

These include:

  • Pushing for drainage and flood control improvements to Brickhouse Gully, including a detention basin to safely store stormwater, to help reduce flooding that threatens homes in the Oak Forest and Mangum Manor subdivisions.
  • Along with Sen. John Whitmire, passing a bill through the Texas Legislature creating the Spring Branch Management District (www.sbmd.org), a community improvement district established to revitalize Spring Branch, create economic growth, and focus on transportation and urban design improvements. The District has already begun providing police patrols, including nine constables within the boundaries of the District. Acting as a “force multiplier,” these officers recently began patrolling and augmenting the city of Houston’s law enforcement as a result of a partnership between the Management District and the Precinct 1 Harris County Constable’s Office.
  • Working with the City of Houston and the Texas Department of Transportation to secure funds for the redevelopment of Long Point Road, Gessner Road, and East TC Jester.
  • Opposing local alcoholic beverage providers who violate and abuse their liquor licenses and fail to honor their commitment to be good neighbors to the surrounding community. These include the Kalua Nite Club near Oak Forest/Mangum Manor and the La Hacienda Cantina, a proposed bar in the quiet residential neighborhood of Shady Acres.
  • Opposed the opening of sexually oriented business that tried to locate near schools and neighborhoods in West Houston, including the Wrenwood and Sherwood Forest subdivisions
  • Working with city and county officials to improve local green space, parks and urban design, including supporting funding for the 11th Street Park — and urban nature preserve — inside the Loop.
  • Holding operators of private water utilities accountable to state and local authorities while ensuring that families living in the Wrenwood subdivision receive water service that meets the highest standards of quality.

Representative Bohac is committed to working together with the city and county to improve our district. If you have an idea for a local community improvement project or suggestion on how to improve our district, please fill out the form and let Dwayne know what he can do to improve our community.
