State Rep. Dwayne Bohac Announces That Major Gessner Road Improvements Will Begin in 2016

State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) is pleased and proud to announce that much needed improvements to N. Gessner Road are scheduled to begin in 2016.

The project will include the design and construction of a six-lane divided concrete roadway with storm drainage, curbs, dedicated turn lanes, sidewalks, driveways, street lighting, traffic control, and necessary underground utilities. The first phase of the project will include the area of Gessner in the heart of Spring Branch.

"Improving our local quality of life has always been my top priority, and I am excited to announce that N. Gessner Road improvements will finally begin in 2016," Rep. Bohac said.  "As a lifelong resident of House District 138, I know firsthand and have heard from constituents for years that we need to fix this thoroughfare. I’m glad that it’s finally becoming a reality thanks to the hard work of local community leaders and transportation officials, the Mayor’s office and City Council, including current District A Council Member Brenda Stardig and previous District A Council Members, Helen Huey, Bruce Tatro, Toni Lawrence and Helena Brown."

The City of Houston cites in its Capital Improvement Plan that this project will replace a street that has been deteriorated beyond economical repair and normal maintenance.

"Parts of N. Gessner and Long Point Roads are a major eyesore in Spring Branch and the primary complaint I heard from constituents when I was first elected," said Rep. Bohac. "With the creation of the Spring Branch Management District by the Texas Legislature in 2003 and working with every District A City Council Member since then, we have been able to tackle Long Point reconstruction one intersection at a time and now, with Council Member Brenda Stardig's leadership at City Hall, we will work together to ensure that this Gessner redevelopment project remains on schedule and becomes a reality for our community."

“I have been concerned about the mobility and public safety along Gessner for years.  This City of Houston project is one that I have advocated for, and I am committed to making sure that it is implemented for our District A residents," said Council Member Brenda Stardig.

The design contract was awarded to Reynolds, Smith & Hills, Inc. in January of 2013 with design completion expected in late 2014. The preliminary engineering report was approved in June 2013. The construction contract is expected to be awarded in August 2015 with the first shovel being turned in 2016.

"For our community to continue to grow and thrive, we must have adequate infrastructure to support business development. I've always said that retail follows rooftops, and rooftops are not sustainable without safe roadways and proper drainage," Rep. Bohac said. "The reconstruction of Gessner will not only improve traffic mobility, reduce accidents and curb flooding, it will also bring a renaissance of new business to the area which will reduce crime and improve property values. I am proud to have worked with civic leaders, neighborhood advocates and the City of Houston to get this project off the ground."

On November 6, 2012, Representative Dwayne Bohac was re-elected to represent House District 138. He is a lifelong district resident. A small businessman, Bohac earned Bachelor's Degrees in Political Science and Marketing from Texas A&M University. He and his family are active members of Second Baptist Church.
