Bohac Joins Lawmakers in Calling For Immediate Action on Border Security

In a letter to Gov. Perry, Bohac and other GOP Lawmakers urge immediate action on the border

Governor Perry:

Social unrest and political instability is presenting serious humanitarian and border security challenges. Drug cartels are exploiting this situation in the conduct of their illegal international human and drug trafficking. According to the Department of Public Safety, at least 80 percent of this spike in border crossings involves people from Central America, to include individuals with a link to international terrorist organizations.

The people of Southeast Texas are supportive of Attorney General Greg Abbott's recent request to the national government for assistance to accomplish the task that the Constitution has mandated through four centuries. Although you and other Texas leaders have consistently made similar appeals to Washington, D.C., our federal government has not been responsive, indicating that the President, Congress, and the national courts either lack the political will to secure our borders and ports of entry or they just blatantly disrespect our Constitution and the rule of law. However, as elected state officials, we have an inherent responsibility to ensure safe communities.

Our state law enforcement officials have estimated that an additional $1.3 million per week, over and beyond existing appropriations and without the expectation of national government action, will provide the resources to substantially abate the lawlessness and humanitarian crisis on the border. I am requesting that we provide these resources to DPS immediately, and if it requires legislative action, I urge you to call a special session for this specific purpose.

I am proud to serve with you and our state government, and I stand ready to support you in ensuring that we secure our Texas borders and maintain safe communities.

Sincerely,

James White
