Bohac Bill Expands Tax Free Holiday to Include School Supplies

AUSTIN, TEXAS–Every August Texas families begin to prepare their children for the upcoming school year by shopping for back to school clothes and school supplies. This year families can expect additional savings. During the 81st session of the Texas Legislature State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) passed an important piece of legislation to expand the state's annual sales tax holiday to include school supplies.

The Texas Comptroller estimates that the items the Bohac bill add to the list of those exempt from sales tax will save families $9.5 million each year. This year the tax holiday will be August 21st through 23rd.

  • Cellophane tape
  • Blackboard chalk
  • Compasses
  • Composition books
  • Crayons
  • Erasers
  • Folders
  • Glue, paste and paste sticks
  • Highlighters
  • Index cards
  • Index card boxes
  • Legal pads
  • Lunch boxes
  • Markers
  • Notebooks
  • Paper
  • Pencil boxes and other school supply boxes
  • Pencil sharpeners
  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Protractors
  • Rulers
  • Scissors
  • Writing tablets
