Bohac Hopes To Increase Lung Cancer Awareness

AUSTIN, TEXAS–For the third time Texas will recognize November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This program of awareness and education was created by State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) and Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) in 2007 through House Bill 1449.

Lung cancer is one of the most common and deadly forms of cancer and is the second leading cause of death in America. This particular disease will kill more people this year than all other cancers combined.

“Lung cancer is considered the ‘silent killer’ because unlike other forms of cancer, it is virtually undetectable until it is too far progressed,” Bohac said. “It’s an extremely deadly disease and does not just happen to folks with a history of smoking. More that 20% of lung cancer victims have never smoked before.”

House Bill 1449 states that Lung Cancer Awareness Month may be recognized in public schools across Texas and in other places to raise awareness of lung cancer and support for lung cancer research. “This bill focuses attention on lung cancer awareness in our public schools each November, and allows for an even broader discussion of cancer in general across Texas,” said Bohac.

“Research has shown us that through public education and policy changes, the number of people affected by lung cancer can be decreased,” Claudia Rodas, regional government relations director for the American Cancer Society said. “We urge the Legislature to continue to bring awareness to this devastating disease by passing policies like this and funding programs for early detection and education about lung cancer and treatment.”

This marks the third year that Lung Cancer Awareness Month has been recognized in Texas. “Increasing awareness and educating all citizens about this deadly disease can save lives,” said Bohac.
