Independence Day

Dear Friends,

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman.

The document explained to England and the world the grievances of the thirteen colonies, and the Declaration laid the groundwork for America’s struggle for independence.

Fifty-six delegates signed the Declaration with the signatures arranged by states from northernmost New Hampshire to southernmost Georgia. The signers were declared “traitors” by the King of England and faced certain execution if their attempt to create a free and representative country were to fail.

These united colonies declared that they were free from the allegiance to the British Crown and that any political connection between them and Great Britain was dissolved. And with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, the signers pledged to one another their lives, fortunes, and honor.

So, 231 years later, let us remember this day with a renewed passion for freedom. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.
