Mangum Manor Residents Successful in Effort to Revoke Club’s Liquor License

HOUSTON - State Representative Dwayne Bohac announced that the Kalua Nite Club on Mangum Road is no longer selling alcohol thanks to the combined efforts of neighborhood leaders and local officials.

A division of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said that the night club’s owner, Nelson A. Flores, requested that his application for a Wine and Beer Retailer’s Permit and Retail Dealer’s On-Premise Late Hours License be voluntarily cancelled in early November of 2005. As a result, those licenses expired February 1st.

“We have effectively forced this club owner to back down by sending the message that we’re not going to tolerate criminal activity in our neighborhood,” Bohac said.

Concerned citizens fought alongside Rep. Bohac, Houston City Council Member Toni Lawrence and Mayor Bill White’s office to fight the renewal of the club’s licenses.

“We are very happy with this outcome,” Mangum Manor president Brad Young said. “It has been a long struggle, but this shows that concerted efforts by concerned citizens can make a difference in our community. The support we have received has been great; we have a lot of folks to thank: Representative Bohac, Council Member Lawrence, TABC, the City of Houston and our past civic club president, Janice Gabriel have all helped make this happen.”

Residents of the Mangum Manor Civic Association living near the night club attributed a rise in shootings, vandalism, graffiti and vagrancy to the establishment. The Houston Police Department logged 121 calls for service to the club in 2002 and 146 calls in 2003.

”Mangum Manor is a great place to live, work and raise a family,” Council Member Toni Lawrence said. “That these licenses will not be renewed comes as a result of two years of hard work. It is amazing to see what can happen when motivated individuals and their local elected officials act to improve our local quality of life.”
