Representative Bohac Reminds Texas Families to Take Advantage of Texas' Sales Tax Holiday

Houston, TX -- As the school year begins, State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Spring Branch) reminds Texas families and shoppers to take advantage of our state's annual sales tax holiday this weekend, August 17-19.

"In these challenging economic times, Texas families can use every penny of savings they can find when managing their budgets," Rep. Bohac said.  "I urge all families and shoppers to capitalize on this money saving weekend as they prepare their children for the upcoming school year."

The three day, annual sales tax holiday exempts Texas shoppers from paying sales and use taxes on most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100.  This will save shoppers roughly $8 on every $100 they spend.

Since the annual sales tax holiday was enacted in 1999, it has already saved Texas families $626.9 million with a projected savings of $64.8 million for 2012.  In 2009, Rep. Bohac successfully authored legislation to add most school supplies and backpacks to the list of exempted items during the sales tax holiday.  After this weekend, Texas families will have saved over $1.6 million since 2009 on school supplies and backpacks.

On November 2, 2010, Representative Dwayne Bohac was re-elected to represent House District 138.  Rep. Bohac is a proud, lifelong resident of the district who has focused on improving local quality of life.  During the 82nd Legislature, Bohac helped pass a balanced state budget without raising taxes, a resolution calling for a federal balanced budget amendment, voter photo ID legislation, legislation that requires proof of citizenship to obtain a Texas drivers license, stronger pro-life legislation and helped restore more local control for public schools.
