Emergency Food Stamp Assistance Available to Ike Victims

Texas will be providing emergency food stamps to Hurricane Ike victims who qualify and will automatically replace benefits for program participants in the storm’s path. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) sought and received a federal waiver to make the emergency assistance available to low-income individuals and families living in any of the 29 counties that have been declared disaster areas.

CenterPoint Energy Restores Power to 723,000 Customers

CenterPoint Energy reported that as of 8 p.m., the company had restored power to 723,000 customers, leaving 1.43 million, or 63 percent of the company’s customers, still without power. Based on new damage assessment data, the company projects that in the next seven days it will have restored power to 50 to 75 percent of those customers who lost power from Hurricane Ike.

FEMA: Transitional Housing Assistance Available for Texas Evacuees with Inaccessible or Unlivable Homes

The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), at the request of the State of Texas, will activate its transitional sheltering initiative to allow eligible Ike evacuees from Texas, who cannot return to their homes, to stay in hotels or motels until it is safe for them go home.
