Dwayne Bohac is the only homeowner and lifelong resident of District 138 on the ballot. He is a ranking member of the House Committee on Ways & Means that has jurisdiction over local governments’ ability to levy or impose property taxes and the appraisal of property for taxation. And Dwayne Bohac is leading the fight for lower property taxes and appraisal reform.

Dwayne Bohac believes skyrocketing property taxes are out of control and that no one should have to live in fear of being taxed out of their home. In the Legislature, Bohac passed a property tax exemption for disabled veterans and is leading the fight to lower the current 10% residential property tax appraisal cap to 5% or less for ALL homeowners. And last session, he filed legislation that would abolish ALL property taxes for seniors—a measure he will continue to advance next session.

These are a few of the reasons why he was voted “Taxpayers’ Best Friend” by his colleagues in the Texas House. Dwayne is the only candidate with a proven record of delivering results for property tax relief:

Lowering the Appraisal Cap

Dwayne Bohac is fighting to lower the current 10% residential property tax appraisal cap to 5% or less for ALL homeowners and is the only legislator to get this proposal through the Texas House. This measure would stop skyrocketing property taxes from taxing people out of their homes.

Property Tax Exemption for Veterans

Bohac co-authored and passed HB 3613, a property tax exemption for disabled veterans. Under Bohac’s law, fully disabled veterans are eligible for a property tax exemption on the total appraised value of their residence homestead. And now he’s fighting for that same exemption for Purple Heart recipients. He introduced HB 1591 that would award a full property tax exemption to those who have been wounded in battle or to their surviving spouse if they gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Abolishing Property Taxes for Seniors

There comes a point in life where you have paid your dues. Property taxes are a reality that all Texas homeowners must face under current law, but for those who have paid their fair share, seen their children—or grandchildren—through the system, and have done their part to fund local services…there must be a finish line. There must be that attainable goal of TRULY OWNING YOUR OWN HOME. Last session, Dwayne Bohac filed legislation that would abolish ALL property taxes for seniors—a measure he will continue to advance next session.
