Rep. Bohac Awards Scholarships to Local Grads

HOUSTON–Three college-bound students were awarded the Dwayne Bohac Textbook Scholarship as they prepared to leave for their first semester in college.

Sara Beth Gabler, Elizabeth Anne Sobol and John Louis Harper were each awarded $250 to go towards purchasing first semester textbooks. Gabler, a Scarborough High School graduate plans to attend the University of Houston. Sobol, a Spring Woods High School graduate plans to attend Texas A&M University at College Station. Harper, a graduate of Houston Christian High School will attend the University of Arizona.

“These young people have done an amazing job and it is with great pleasure that I have the chance to help them in their college education,” Bohac said.

A committee of local leaders reviewed the applications from students at each high school in Bohac’s district.

In applying for the scholarship, students were asked to detail ACT scores and overall grade point average. Applicants were also asked to list extracurricular activities, particularly those that contribute to character development. These activities could include athletic teams, academic clubs, after-school jobs, volunteer work, religious activities and others.

Another element of the application involved an essay. Students were asked to write 200 words given the opening line, “I feel the primary political challenge for my generation is…“

Bohac said he launched the scholarship program because he remembers how difficult it can be to cover all the unforeseen costs of college, especially in the first year.

“I remember the challenges of my first year in college,” Bohac said. “The cost seems so big and every bit helps when it comes to trying to cover expenses.”
