Today, State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) and State Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) held a press conference to discuss HB 1087 and SB 426 that will expand the state's annual sales tax holiday weekend. Specifically, the bills will increase the purchase limit amount on clothing, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies eligible for sales tax exemption from $100 to $200 while adding certain electronic devices, such as computers, tablets and e-readers, to the list of school supply items that are tax-free during the sales tax holiday.

AUSTIN -- The back-to-school Sales Tax Holiday weekend has saved Texans more than $862 million on clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies.

State Rep. Dwayne Bohac Files Major Property Tax Relief Legislation for Texas Homeowners

Legislative package would cap appraisals and increase the Homestead Exemption

State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) has filed a property tax relief package that will reduce the tax burden on Texas homeowners.  HB 957 reduces the appraisal cap from 10 percent to 5 percent, while HB 958 will increase the standard homestead exemption from $15,000 to $30,000 for school district tax purposes.

Outraged when his first-grader came home from school talking about a ‘holiday tree,’ Texas lawmaker Dwayne Bohac vowed to bring back ‘Christmas freedom.’ And he’s succeeding.

Shove those “holiday trees” aside. Feed your “Season’s Greetings” to the Yule log. Deck your halls instead with boughs of holly, shouting “Merry Christmas” (or “Happy Hanukkah”) well into the night.

The latest front in the War on Christmas, like so many of its battles, began in Texas. In 2012, Dwayne Bohac, a state lawmaker from Houston, picked up his son from first grade and was alarmed to hear the boy say he had spent the day putting holiday decorations on a holiday tree.

As students head into the final week before “winter break” and plan for their “winter parties” state lawmakers are reminding residents that they are free to use the greeting of their choice — “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Hanukkah” or “Happy holidays,” if you must.

Other States Follow Texas' Lead to Promote Christmas Freedom

"It's the first anniversary of Texas' bill," Bohac told Breitbart Texas. "We want to get a national debate going and inspire other states to pass their own versions of the Merry Christmas bill."

According to Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston), one of the lawmakers who helped pass the bill, Missouri and Tennessee have already passed comparable legislation. In eight other states, similar bills have been filed in one chamber or the other.
