Texas House Approves Ban on Sanctuary Cities

The Texas House of Representatives recently approved legislation that prohibits sanctuary city policies in Texas. Senate Bill 4 ensures federal immigration laws that are already on the books are followed and enforced by prohibiting local entities such as cities and counties from adopting sanctuary city policies which threaten public safety. "The purpose of this legislation is to protect Texans from criminals who are here illegally. We are trying to make sure those bad actors who commit serious crimes are detained until we can determine their status," said Representative Dwayne Bohac (Houston-District 138), who cosponsored the legislation. "This is about enforcing the law of the land and making sure our local jurisdictions are doing their job to keep us safe. No city or county in Texas should be allowed to ignore the law. We are finally ending this practice once and for all during this session.”

Rep. Bohac Tours Southern Border and Gives Update on Operations, Tactics and Results

Last Friday, State Rep. Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) traveled to McAllen with Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Steve McCraw to tour Texas’ southern border and speak with law enforcement officials about the state of border security.  This past legislative Session which ended in June, over $800 million was appropriated to fund aggressive, year-round border security strategies.  Since 2014, DPS has been engaged in a border surge called Operation Strong Safety, which is a large scale, multi-agency law enforcement border initiative along the Rio Grande River designed to detect and interdict drug and human smuggling.

LEGISLATURE: Rep. Bohac legislation would beef up border security and crackdown on drug trafficking, human smuggling

State Representative Dwayne Bohac (Houston) has announced the authorship of two bills that significantly strengthen border security and help law enforcement crackdown on border-related crime. HB 11, the “Stronger Border, Safer Texas Act,” is an omnibus bill that will dramatically increase the number of Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers in the border region, impose tougher penalties on smugglers, and provide more resources for police statewide. HB 1450 will establish the Texas Border Security Division which will focus on busting up criminal cartels throughout the southern border region.
