The Harris County Commissioners Court plans to call a flood control district bond election for August 25, 2018—the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. Registered voters in Harris County will be asked to vote on $2.5 billion in bonds for flood risk reduction projects throughout the county. Community Engagement Meetings began in June, including ones for the Addicks Reservoir and White Oak Bayou watersheds that affect District 138. Next week, the meetings for the Buffalo Bayou and Barker Reservoir watersheds are being held on July 30th and August 1st.

I am pleased to announce that I will be co-hosting an event with State Representative Jim Murphy (District 133) bringing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) representatives to West Houston this Tuesday, June 5th. I invite you and your neighbors to attend and meet with FEMA staff to discuss National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claims issues and the continued recovery after Harvey. This is a great opportunity to meet with FEMA representatives who can answer your specific NFIP questions and provide valuable information about the rebuilding process as it continues in our community.

In my ongoing commitment to keep my constituents updated on the progress to recover and rebuild from Hurricane Harvey and other recent floods, I wanted to pass along this update from the Harris County Flood Control District regarding sediment removal from Horsepen Creek, Langham Creek and Bear Creek.

State Representative Dwayne Bohac (Houston-District 138) joined Governor Greg Abbott and local leaders at Houston City Hall this week as the Governor announced the availability of new funding for hazard mitigation projects along the Gulf Coast following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. This allocation of funding from FEMA will provide an estimated $1 billion for hazard and flood mitigation projects designed to both help Texas rebuild and reduce the risk of future damage from flooding and hurricanes.

State Representative Dwayne Bohac (District 138-Houston) is pleased to report the City of Houston is opening an additional Neighborhood Restoration Center in northwest Houston this week. This new location at the Spring Branch Community Health Center is part of a partnership with Memorial Assistance Ministries to offer long-term disaster recovery support and services in neighborhoods hit hardest by Harvey and will open on February 1st.

Harris County residents and our Gulf Coast neighbors experienced one of the worst flooding disasters in U.S. history when Hurricane Harvey came ashore in August. As we continue working together on the recovery and rebuilding process, I want to make sure area residents are aware of all the resources available to help them through these trying times. Governor Greg Abbott has distributed a $50 million check from his Disaster Relief Fund to help the City of Houston cover debris removal and insurance deductible costs related to Hurricane Harvey. As a result, Mayor Sylvester Turner has withdrawn a proposed one-year property tax rate hike he had originally intended to collect from Houston residents.
